SIR C.P. RAMASWAMI AIYAR MEMORIAL
NURSERY & PRIMARY SCHOOL, KUMBAKONAM

In 1941, the C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Trust donated a house property located at T.S. No. 500, Ward No. 3, Door No. 17, Mettu Street in Kumbakonam to Kumbakonam Municipality for educational purposes, to run a primary school.  Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Primary School ran on the premises till it was closed down during 1999-2000 and the building was kept vacant since then.

In the meantime, the unused property had become the den of every anti-social activity and the Kumbakonam Muncipal Council was appraised of the run down state of the school and misuse of the property. Citing the fact that it opposed our recent Government Policy to establish schools in every street, our Public Relations Officer, Mr. N. Srinivasan, who belongs to Kumbakonam, motivated the Council Members to pass a resolution for returning back the land and building to the C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation, Chennai, for restarting the school.

The process was commenced on January 2, 2002 and after incessant reminders and personal follow-ups, subsequent to a resolution of the Kumbakonam Municipal Council in 2005, the Municipal Administration Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu vide their G.O. (2-D) No.5 dated 01-02-2005 agreed to temporary transfer of possession to the C.P.Ramaswami Aiyar Foundation, retaining the ownership with the Municipality, for running a school. 

Massive renovation works were carried out and Sir C.P.Ramaswami Aiyar Memorial Nursery & Primary School has been established at the building premises.  Necessary recognition to run a regular Primary & Nursery School and application for renewal of permission from the Government Education Department, will be submitted in March, 2006. In the meantime, Montessori education has been introduced as a pilot effort and about 15 students were admitted on October 12, 2005 - Vijayadashami Day - for the benefit of the neighbouring children. Parental and public co-operation has been extra-ordinary. There is a paid English section and FREE Tamil section.

Eminent educationalists and environmentalists of Kumbakonam Town have joined to form a “Sir C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Forum” and assist our local educational activities.
